Local Development Frameworks (LDF's)
Local Plans and Unitary Development Plans (UDP's) have been replaced by Local Development Frameworks (LDFs). A Local Development Framework is basically a folder of planning documents that outline how your local area will be managed and how your community will be shaped.
The LDF is part of a two-tiered structure to planning that was introduced with the Planning & Compulsory Purchase Act 2004. This system consists of the Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS) that outlines a broad 15 to 20 year spatial planning strategy for the region and the LDF's that outline a spatial planning strategy for your local area (district councils, unitary authorities and national park authorities all produce them). The RSS sets out a broad framework and context for the LDF's, such as housing numbers, employment and environmental protection.
LDFs are made up of Local Development Documents (LDDs). These consist of Development Plan Documents, such as the Core Strategy and proposals map as well as the Statement of Community Involvement, Annual Monitoring Report, Local Development Scheme, Supplementary Planning Documents, LDO’s and SPZ’s (Local development orders & Simplified planning zones).
