Planning Policy Statements (PPS) & Planning Policy Guidance (PPG)

Planning Policy Statements and Planning Policy Guidance are National Planning Policy guidelines, that give guidance to local authorities in respect of national planning issues such as energy, bio-diversity and sustainablity to name a select few.

Guidance was first introduced in England and Wales in 1988 with Planning Policy Guidance Notes.  National planning policy in England is now expressed in Planning Policy Statements that are slowly replacing the former documents (PPG's).

'They also explain the relationship between planning policies and other policies which have an important bearing on issues of development and land use.  Local authorities must take their contents into account in preparing their development plan documents. The guidance may also be relevant to decisions on individual planning applications and appeals.'
