Freelance roles for research and development project
Closing date 19 May 2025
Thanks to The National Lottery Heritage Fund and National Lottery players, we’re embarking on an exciting six-month R&D project to help us create a natural walking and cycling trail around the Liverpool City Region, and we have four part-time freelance opportunities to help make our ambition a reality.
The Liverpool City Region trail builds on the success of CPRE’s walking trail in Greater Manchester, which you can find out more about here.
We’re looking for people to fill the following roles:
Researcher – Heritage
🌿 A Researcher to undertake in-depth study of the major features and sites of natural, industrial and cultural heritage within the Liverpool City Region, as well as exploring how this heritage can connect to local communities; how we can work with local experts, and more…. Your work will feed into a feasibility report to support funding bids.
You’ll need to know the Liverpool City Region really well and have proven experience in heritage research, historical research, or a closely related field.
This is a six-month role from May/June 2025.

Community Engagement Specialist
🏠 A Community Engagement Specialist to devise and implement a community engagement plan that ensures we understand the need and appetite for the proposed trail and route(s), and to find ways that inclusion, participation and access to green space and heritage, can be encouraged particularly among local communities and specialist groups.
You’ll need to know the Liverpool City Region well, and have proven experience of successful Community Engagement projects in a similar field.
This is a six-month role from May/June 2025.

Walking Route Researcher
🥾 A Researcher to research and document engaging, safe, and accessible walking routes for the trail, with a focus on natural, built and cultural heritage. Working closely with the Cycling Route Researcher, Heritage Researcher and Community Engagement Specialist, you’ll explore potential route options on foot and devise a recommended route, or set of routes, that will cater to a diverse range of abilities and interests.
You’ll need to know the Liverpool City Region well, enjoy walking, and be enthusiastic about encouraging more people to get out and about on foot.
This is a six-month role from May/June 2025.

Cycling Route Researcher
