Our response to the government’s plans to protect 30% of England’s land

16th July 2026

The government has published its roadmap for protecting 30% of England’s land for nature by 2030.

England is at a turning point for nature recovery.

The UK government has committed to effectively conserve and manage 30% of our land and seas for nature by 2030 – our 30by30 commitment.

The government has now published its roadmap for protecting 30% of England’s land for nature by 2030. The plan simply sets out a direction of travel of how we’ll protect 30% of England’s land for nature by 2030, instead of a credible roadmap and action plan that nature urgently needs.

We’re a long way from the target, with currently only 3% of land in England being protected and manged for nature, leaving us with only 4 years to get to 30%.

If the Government is serious about achieving this goal, we need to see clear plans to reward nature-friendly land management, restore protected sites (including the Green Belt and National Parks) and stop habitat destruction.
